hey !

i, trying to help a buddy from our marina with his 1989 mercury 2 stroke. he bought it cheap because it fails to shift into reverse. we replaced the clutch and now it shifts fine when you do it directly on the lower unit . but when you reassamble it and shift it via the rod on the upper unit it will shift fine forward and neutral, but fails to go into reverse. it seems its about to shift- you feel it when turning te prop , but it does not fully engage and slips on the clutch.

the clutch is brand new.

are we overlooking something ? has anybody an idea ?

thanks

This is the parts list from a 1989 50hp:

50/60 H.P. - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See cam, item 50 under GEAR HOUSING (DRIVE SHAFT). Did you have it off of the lower shift shaft splines when you removed the LU and if so, did you position it correctly per the manual when you re-installed it?

Re: 1989 50hp mercury do not shift into reverse

I am having a similar problem with my 115 merc, When trying to shift from neutral to reverse it seems to be binding . I removed the lower and noticed the cog that you are speaking about above had burrs on it so i replaced it , i assumed we put it back on the way the old one came of but how can i be sure? when we re installed the lower we have the same binding

thanks for any help
