I have a 1989 70 hp yamaha which only came with a manual choke. In doing some resarch, the carb parts are identical between the 70hp and the 90hp in that year and the 90hp comes with the auto choke selenoid. Everyone I talk to says that were the parts are the same I should be able to do this. The Problem is I do not know where or how the selenoid gets mounted and hooked up to the choke linkage. I have veiwed several repair manuals and I cannot find a picture of this set up. Would any one out there with a 90hp yamaha want to email me a picture of the motor and selenoid mount.
Has anyone out there done this before. I am guessing that I am not the only guy who is frustrated with running back and forth to the motor to start it in the morning.

Re: 1989 70 hp choke modification

Honestly, I would think it would work, but i am not sure......only saying cause i own a 1990 70hp yamaha, but i have the electric choke, and manual.. If i had a choice i would rather have, the manual one....cause the auto is a wimping design, and accessing it will be a bare......but you could purchase a 1990 service manual and look at the repair pictures, accessing the electric choke... and maybe visualize what you can do

Just a thought

my motor is a 1999 Yamaha 90C with the electric/solenoid choke on the middle carb, only use it on first start up in the morning, rest of day no choke needed. you may be able to replace your manual choke with the electronic one but it will need that special mounting and need to be wired into your ignition switch or some type of circuit to actuate the solenoid. of course cold weather starting could be a factor but we don't do much boating in cold weather. are you sure you even really need the choke and if so just on a cold morning start? maybe it'll be more trouble than it's worth. if i had a manual choke I'd probably just leave it like it is. try starting your motor without the choke...just be sure you pump the primer bulb up good and upen your throttle just a bit and i'll bet she fires right up! Good luck.
