Hi all. 100% outboard NOOB here. A question for you all if I may. I have a 1989 85hp Force outboard on my 1989 Playbouy pontoon boat and it was working when I put it in storage a few weeks ago. Before I put it in storage, the motor ran great but I wasn't getting water out of the exhaust when I ran the motor in a barrel so I pulled the lower unit to check the impeller and thermostat. Mechanically speaking, I'm proficient so this was no problem. 2 of the vanes on the impeller were broken and the thermostat was in pretty rough shape so I replaced them.

Here's my problem. I want to put the lower unit back in the outboard but I need to tilt the motor up to get it in there. When I put the key in and turn the ignition to on (not trying to turn over the motor), I get NOTHING! Zip! I had the battery checked and it's fully charged so there's no problem there. Not only do I not get any power to the engine, none of the electronics work. Assuming that something in the wiring came unplugged I can understand not getting any power to the lights or the stereo BUT at the very least, I would think that the trim would work. The motor wires come off the battery and go in to the motor and then from the motor to the Throttle Control. When I turn the key to the accessory position, I should have power to trim up the motor shouldn't I? Also, before I put the boat in storage, every now and again, when I turned the key, nothing would happen. I'd come back 10 minutes later and the boat would fire up with no problem. While I really don't know what the problem is, it sure does sound like the ignition switch in the throttle is dead. All of other electronics are wired so as not to come on unless the key is in and turned to the accessory position. Any thoughts? Thanks!!!!!

Corrosion somewhere. Probably the ground. Looking good doesn't cut it. Take apart, clean to shiney metal and reassemble.

That's one of the first things I looked for. I looked at both the hot wire and the ground wire and they both looked good. I will look again but for the most part, all the connections look to be in pretty good shape.

Fuses under the dash.Circut breakers on the motor.Loose connections.
Most cases the tilt works without the key.

Or it could be the switch itself being bad. How do you test it? Use a small jumper wire with little alligator clips or use an ohmmeter. First you need to figure out which connections or terminals on the switch is being "closed" when you turn it on and when you put it in start and also the choke. As soon as you ID all of these, then you can either use a jumper to try it or use an ohmmeter to read if the contacts closes when you turn on the switch. If you do the ohmmeter reading, disconnect the battery first.

Well, it turns out that something tripped the circuit breaker. I reset it and the electrical stuff works as it should. Thanks for the input!!
