Initial tune up: you should start with a compression test first and then a spark test??

As racerone says timing does not get out of adjustment.
If you have change trigger ring it maybe need adjustment.
The OEM spec is 28 dgr BTDC static timing (running the starter) and 32 dgr BTDC if you set it dynamic (setting it at WOT).
I would suggest to set the dynamic timing at a bit retard to 30 dgr BTDC due to the bad fuel today.

Thank you. I got motor from someone who tinkered with everything he could get a wrench on. Just want to check it before I go any further.

It had np spark to begin with. Changed stator and now it cranks and idles fine, but will not power up when you throttle it. Tries to, but then dies. Hard to start after it dies. If you wait for a few minutes, it will ll start up again but dies if you put it in gear and throttle it. Runs fine out of gear. Just dies when you put a load on it. Control cables were off it when I got it. Shift rod wasn't connected to foot. Lot of adjusting I'm sure I got to read up on and do. Just want to make sure it's timed first. Also, the overheat buzzer comes on right when I turn the key on. Didn't do that when I first tried to crank it. Started randomly buzzing as soon as key is turned to power.

First thing, compression test?
Then check the fuel pump diaphragm.
Lots of twin cyl. motors actually run on 1 cyl. check the spark on both cylinders.
Clean the carb and make sure the jets are clear.
