1989 classic mercury motor

Ran fine last winter around november tried starting motor in june the starter would turn the striker but the striker would not ingage up to the fly wheel not sure but I think I might need to replace the starter. I dont want to replace the starter if its something else any help would be great thanks

Could be a stuck bendix drive or a bad connection or a flat battery.

Charge battery. Clean ALL battery/starter connections. Lubricate the bendix.

if the gear on the starter is not spinning - change the starter - if it is spinning spray some penetrating oil on the gear and shaft and try turniong the gear counterclockwise to see if it will ride up to the flywheel - if it goes get it nice and loose ,give er a couple starts -wipe off the pent oil and put some 10/30 motor oil or whatever you use in your gasoline car/truck - not diesel oil ( too thick when cold and collects more dirt)

thanks it ended up being all I had to do is clean the battery cables worked fine after that. I suppose when I disconnected the cables last year they sat for 6 months and thats all it took for them to get dirty enough for the striker on the starter not to come up to the fly wheel.
