evening guys,
just got a slightly used 1898 evinrude e25elceb mounted on an 16' avon, (hasn't been run for 8 years, but was serviced last 8 years ago, and only ran in fresh water for a couple hours after a complete service) and i would like to service the water pump, and change gear oil,
i have maintained alpha one's for years, but this is my first outboard,
so, my question is, what is the trick to get the gearcase off to get to the pump, i have read there is something in the intake or under the carb that needs to be done for removal, also, what is the best gear oil and fuel mix to use,
thanks, Paul
ps, i purged the fuel supply line and cleaned tank, and all the fuel looked new, hope inside the cowling was well maintained.

thanks dj,
got the unit apart, the disconnect was at the water intake, replaced pump and got it back together, ONE QUESTION, i am new to outboards, is a 1989 evindude 25 2 stroke supposed to smoke through the exhaust while running in a barrel? (io's don't do this)
ALSO, at the top of the water tube there was a grommet, not a washer when i took it apart, the schematic showed a washer, anybody know these evinrudes well enough to give me a clue on what's up with that?
thanks, Paul

Yes some exhaust passes through the prop. The top of the water tube has a washer and then the rubber grommet.

thanks cofe,
when taking the gearcase apart all that was on the water tube was the grommet BELOW the retainer ring on the water tube, and NO washer,
i put it back together as it came apart, ran and pee'd fine, but smokes more than i thought was normal, (i am a rookte with outboards)
so, took it apart again thinking the grommet should be in the upper housing and not on the tube
i installed the grommet in the upper unit before putting in the gearcase, the grommet seemed to fit in the upper unit well,
BUT, when reassemblyind again and running it, it didn't pee after running for about 30 seconds, so, shut it down and am here for advice,
your knowledge would be much appreciated.
thanks, Paul

That washer fits just above the retainer ring on the water tube. From what I gather, it is there to help support the rubber grommet. I do not think you really need that washer, and just running the grommet on the water tube should be fine. Yes the grommet is installed on the water tube, and just pushed into the upper exhaust housing. Install it first before you raise the lower unit into place, install a couple of bolts by a couple of threads, and use two screwdrivers to push the retaining ring on the lower portion of the water tube into the grommet that is in the water pump. Finish bolting her up, and go fishing. Good Luck

ok, so do i put the grommet on the top of the retaining ring of the water tube or below the retainer ring? it WAS BELOW the ring on the shaft of the tube when taking it apart,
thanks again cofe, Paul

The grommet fits very tightly on the water tube, if it doesn't I would suggest you get a new one. The grommet goes up above the ring on the water tube.
If you want to put a washer on, the factory one is made of a fiberglass material and is slightly smaller OD than the OD of the grommet. You can probably find something at a hardware store that will work.

also, the peeing problem was my own doing, i always used muffs before, ran it in a barrel this time since it easy to do with a small outboard, didn't have the water level high enough, i just submerged the intakes past the cavitation plate, not enough to suck water.
HOPE i didn't fry the pump after running it for about 30 or 40 seconds, it seems to be pumping fine, but i'm tempted to take it apart again to check it out, any thoughts?
Thanks, Paul
