I have a 1989 50 Evinrude that we run on a pontoon. It has always performed great until today. While running at about 3/4 throttle it "slipped" out of gear and began to free rev. When you idle it down and then put it back into gear you can go at low speed but when it goes faster it acts like free rev again. There wasnt any noises or anything it just started. Someone did mention that there is a rubber fitting to the prop that might be letting it free spin but I have not torn into it yet. Any help is appreciated.

It's called a spun hub TP.....it's when the rubber hub in the prop loses it's grip on the metal prop hub. High rev and slowing or no pick up in forward motion is classic spun hub.

If you want to verify the spun hub, draw a reference line from the rubber hub out to the metal hub of the prop. Take the rig out and let the problem occur. After, remove the prop and check the reference line. If the line on the rubber is not matched up to the line on the metal, hub is spun. Any good prop shop can rehub it for you.
