Just bought a 1989 Evinrude 88SPL that wouldn't idle and was discovered to have a bad piston. The engine included a free boat attached - all for $600.00. Looking from the back, its the top-right cyl.
I have replaced pistons on a chevy 350 and assume I can here too. (My first mistake?)
Questions - Is it poss. to do while engine is upright still mounted to the boat? It looks like the engine breaks in half but if I take the carbs off, can I access the rods and rod bolts through there?
I ordered the shop manual and it will be here in 3 days.
I have read almost every Evinrude and Johnson entry on this website and think its a good deal that so many people are willing to help.
Thanks
Steve

Hillbilly's famous last words;

Welcome!!

Its gotta come off. Even if you could get to the rod bolts how were you going to bore it? Or clean it?

Most likely it has broken rings. I'll bet the piston right below it has at least stuck rings (coked up). The port side should be slightly better.

Go ahead and take the lower rear pan off. Youll see the powerhead bolts. No need to remove the lower front small pan.

Your correct about the rings. I didn't realize that the block w/ all 4 cyl and crank could be removed..Makes it easier I suppose. Your talking about leaving the drive shaft and foot mounted on the boat right?

What is that big pin called, where the whole motor hinges on on when tilting? Its corroded and needs replaced.
Thanks To all...
Steve

Well, the lower unit has to come off at some point for the new water pump assembly. And if youre going to replace the corroded tilt tube (or steering tube) it'll be easier with the powerhead and lower unit off too.
