1989 force 150hp gearcae cover seal installation

Hi peeps was just getting ready to put my lower unit back together ,and i have forgotten what way my lower unit gearcase cover seals go in.Specificly the lower seal,think its the oil seal.should it be pressed in with the flat side down or the side thats open with the tension ring showing?thanks.

because water is constantly flowing over this seal it is more important to keep water out that to try to keep oil in. Therefore, the seal should be pressed in with the garter spring up towards the water pump and the flat side down. In the real world, it probably won't make any difference, however, OMC engineers strongly believe in direction-- They use two seals, each facing opposite directions, to keep water out and oil in, on both the drive shaft and prop shaft. That's one reason 'Rudes cost more than Forces.
