1989 Force 5hp Flywheel Removal

I have a 1989 Force 5hp Mercury Model H0052F89A. I'm trying to remove the flywheel, since I'm getting no spark. Is the flywheel bolt a left handed thread? I'm treating it like a regular right hand thread and it is not budging.

My manual doesn't say anything about it being a left hand thread. It just says to "remove the bolt". I do know that the flywheel bolt or nut can be a bear sometimes. Helps if you have access to a pneumatic impact tool. To generate more leverage, take a length of pipe and slip it over the wrench that you're using.

Hold the gloved palm of your hand over the nut and attached wrench or socket end, and tap the other end of the wrench/socket handle sideways with the side of a hammer (left to right -- counterclockwise). Use a snug fitting wrench or socket (no adjustables, as you don't want to strip the nut). I find this works with flywheel nuts, and just about any stuck nut. For stuck screws, I use a vice grips to grip the shaft of the screwdriver, and tap the end of the vice grips laterally for the same effect (hold the head of the screwdriver tightly in place to keep from stipping the screwhead).

Ok, I am having trouble with my 12.9hp flywheel, It won't budge at all, I have had a socket on it with a hammer hitting it, no go, I tried heat still no good.

OK, got the bolt off. It's regular right hand thread. Left a pool of CRC 6-66 lubricant in it all day, then used the hammer tap technique described above, and it finally gave.

Good going, Klink! Can be frustrating, and hard on knuckles. Got a puller for the flywheel? Maybe some of the lube will help break loose the flywheel too.

just by way of a heads up, it's a good idea to screw that bolt back on a few turns when trying to pull the flywheel. When the flywheel pops, it will go only as far as the bolt. Additionally, the partially attached bolt will protect the shaft when using a puller. (I use an automotive harmonic balancer puller, by the way, for the small motors -- works well.) Lot's of opinions on preferable options -- OMC or Merc puller is probably the best choice, finally, if you want an excuse to get one. See them on Ebay now and then.

Was able to get the flywheel off with a borrowed big two jaw puller. I tightened as much as I could by hand, then pinged it with a hammer to make music, and the vibration got it to snap. Thanks for the good advise about leaving the bolt on, as it does snap off. I found the points all oxidized and the condenser rusted. Cleaned it all up and gapped it, and tested and all is well now. The engine now gets spark, and I got it to run. That's it for the electrical end, now on to the rest of the problems.
