i hey guys. kind of in the same boat ..lol........i bought a 1985 bass tracker bass boat with a 1989 force 85. i was told that the previous owner had replaced one of the pistons and had not finished the rewiring on the motor. (i only paid $500 for this boat so i couldnt pass). ok..got the carbs cleaned..motor rewired and it fired right up!!.. checked lower unit oil...:(..no oil. put some in and its running out a 4" long crack. what is the lower foot made of?? aluminum or pot metal..can it be welded?. was going to pull all gears but the piece behind anode is seized in place. does anyone know where i can buy a lower unit or if there is an interchange chart available for the force/chrysler lower units?. any help would be greatly appreciated. in the summerville, s.c. area

Aluminum, where is it cracked?
IF???? It cracked from water intrusion and freezing?????
Then the gears/ bearings are probably shot.
Look on e-bay and Craigslist for replacements.
Just make sure the drive shaft length is the same.

thanks jerryjerry05. i dont think it cracked from freezing. when i pulled lower unit i found that the gear housing that holds the impeller had not been secured from the previous owner(im guessing) and had broken off and went into the hole where the shift linkage connects to the dog. crack is just above skeg and to the front of it. i can neither get the prop shaft nor the drive shaft out of the casing.

There are two semi-circular clips that hold in the reverse bearing carrier. First you must pull the "spool" To do this you thread into the anode bolt holes two long pieces of all-thread 1/4 X 20. Use a steering wheel puller or harmonic damper puller OT a heavy piece of steel with two clearance holes for the all-thread and a center hole to bear on the prop shaft. Tighten a couple of nuts to pull the spool. It may be difficult. You may strip the anode holes--in that case tap to 5/16 and use larger all-thread.

Now, once the spool is out take a soft drift and tap down on the reverse bearing carrier. Remove the two half circle clips and yank hard on the prop shaft.

The lower unit is an aluminum casting with a high degree of silicon. It can be welded but a good job requires an experienced welder.

See my private message to you. Never mind! Still can't send or receive private messages.
