I started working on a 15 hp Game King I picked up last fall. It's still way too cold here to play in water, so Saturday morning I pulled it in the garage and let the gear case oil drain while I was at work. Pressure tested and replaced the oil when I got home then thought I'd see if I could get it to fire before I changed the impeller.

Compression and spark seem fine, though I had limited time so did not do a proper test on them.

After replacing a bad feed hose with a new one, I got the bulb to get hard. No signs of fuel leakage, so gave it a few pulls - no life. I sprayed some fog into the carb and could get it to pop like it wanted to run but seemed fuel starved. Tried the same with Power Tune with the same results.

I only had enough time left before the Admiral was due home to take "her" garage back to pull the gear case and replace the impeller, which it needed badly. After that I wheeled it back into the cold to sit for nicer weather.

Sunday morning I decided to do something about the fuel system. I froze my fingers off (wind chill was around 20f) but got the carb off and into my small, but warmer workshop. Taking it apart, it didn't look horrible but definitely had some nasty crud in the bowl. I spent a couple hours thoroughly cleaning it and did find a small amount of crud under the old welch plug as well. One I figured which of the 3 possible carbs it was, I ordered the parts to rebuild it.

While I was at it I decided - why stop there? I found the parts to rebuild the fuel pump for less than $10 and ordered new fuel lines as well. May as well eliminate as many potential fuel issues as possible before it gets a run in the barrel.

I hope to have some time next weekend to properly test compression and spark. If the forecast is correct, we mat actually see 50 degrees on the 15th so want everything ready to go before that.

Anything I'm missing or overlooking? I always appreciate help. I'm 69 and still learning.

Power Tune is a good soak for the carb.
Then it should be cleaned from the carb.
I use PT or a spray carb cleaner and then wash it in Dawn soap.
Then rinse in fresh water.
Blow dry.
Don't use any sprays like WD after it's been cleaned.

Just ran my compression and spark tests. 134 on the top and 139 on the bottom. Good 5/16" spark on both.

This week I got everything cleaned up to rebuild the fuel pump and carb. All the parts including new filter and lines arrived Thursday and Friday, so I was able to get them together and installed today.

When I replaced the impeller last weekend I noticed a nasty bend in the skeg I wasn't aware of. I worked on it about an hour today, but still not where I'd like it to be. At least now it's looking more like a bean than a banana :(

Thanks Jerry. Another question. The tank I was given with the motor is a Mercury Mariner tank with a vent knob on the cap. Should it be run with the vent open or screwed down closed?

Finally got up to 46 today and supposed to not have any freezing temps for at least 2 weeks, so decided it was time to see if my work payed off. Got it to pop off without too much effort and after the second start it stayed running. Wasn't fun getting wet, but hearing it purr made it worthwhile.

The only issue I seem to have is getting the idle speed down. The manual says 800-1000rpm in gear, but my Hardline tach is telling me I'm at 2200-2400 even with the adjustment screw all the way out. I had to richen the mixture on the carb to even get it that low. I'm out about 2-1/2 turns now.

Here's my first attempt at a youtube video:

From the movie, It looks like the revs are slower than the tach says????
Get another tach.

Also it needs to be on the boat underway in gear to set it right.

Was wondering myself if that tach could be way off. I'll have to see if one of the auto stores has a "lender" and try again when I can.

Didn't know it had to be underway to set it. Good info. Thanks.
