I've never seen carbs that are not serviceable... On other outboards I've replaced float needles and sets, nozzles and jets and turned old junkers into good as new ones.

Idle mixtures can take a while to get dialed in just right. Engine must be IN the water and IN Forward gear. Tied off to the dock works well. First you want to adjust each carb to "Best Idle'. This can take some time as you must give the motor time to respond to any change. Especially if turning the mixture screw IN to reduce fueling, you have to give the motor time to burn off any excess fuel. Not just from the carbs but any fuel accumulated in the recirc system as that is being pumped back up into the intake of another cyl. You have to be certain all excess fuel has been spent and only what is being passed by the carbs.

The more time spent perfecting this 'Best Idle' the better the motor will run later.

'Best Idle' is not rich enough to allow the motor to accelerate on rapid throttle opening. All carb idle mixture screws must be set even richer to allow crisp clean immediate acceleration. Often this is almost 1/4 turn farther out from 'Best Idle', but too much will load up spark plugs, can cause a bog and excessive fuel consumption. Start at almost 1/8 turn farther out than your 'Best Idle'. Test this by slamming the throttle wide open as in doing a hole shot acceleration. ANY hesitation, bog, or lean cough then open each just the width of the screwdriver bladeslot, repeat the acceleration/throttle test. Repeat adjustment and testing to perfection.

NOTE: A heavier loaded boat, more fuel, coolers, people, equals more load and the motor will need even slightly more fuel to accelerate. Adjust to one bladeslot more than perfection to allow for this.

Still tinkering with it... went through the carbs again. It had been sitting over winter so I was not surprised to find a little water in the gas. It just runs sick. Today I got the carbs back on with new needle valves and seats. It absolutely will not open up and run. It won't idle unless I move the shifter to accelerate. I'm quite sure I've exhausted remedies for carburetor issues and it's time to turn to electronics/ignition. Seems like weak spark or something along those lines. I couldn't get it to do much of anything in the water today. When I put it in gear it just dies. When I pulled it out of the water I did find bottom 3 coil ground wires loose on the terminal where they connect to the switch box. Now I've read something about removing an idle stabilizer. Next chance I have I'll be running all the checks I can on the stator, trigger, and switch boxes, and for sure on the rectifier. For sure I'll be trying to find out about this idle stabilizer which I've never heard of before. Among other things I'll be doing a new set of sparkplugs too.

Man... I've been through those carbs so many times they should have zippers on them by now. The gas IS FRESH. I ran out last time I took this boat out and put fresh gas in it and barely made it home. After much reading I'm thinking it has about got to be electrical but then I've been looking at posts talking about enrichner valves being problems. It does seem logical that if that enrichner valve is stuck open this motor will be flooding. I think by now I've got more than one problem and some of them have developed after all this tinkering with the motor. Might be time to go back to square one and re-evaluate EVERYTHING.

Don't forget about cylinder compression and that mysterious crankcase compression in your trouble shooting.

For sure.. it definitely is good on cylinder compression but I have yet to master crankcase compression. Really need to set up for that since I have about 40 old motors to tinker with.
