OK, so we took a pontoon boat out to the lake that my brother had purchased off Craigslist, the owner said the motor ran great! (Um, yeah, like ten years ago maybe.) So after draining the carbs and getting some decent fuel in the tank, we got it fired up in the storage yard. We did not have a hose hookup and let it run only for a very short period. (in hindsight, this was probably a bad idea.) Took it to the lake immediately, put it in the water, fired it back up, and while my brother was parking the trailer I noticed that there wasn't any water coming out of the tell-tale, again, not a good idea, but I figured if the alarm wasn't sounding yet, the motor must be getting some water to cool it down. After doing a quick circle with the boat, and picking my brother up off the dock, we made it about 50 yards, and the motor just quit. Couldn't get it restarted, and that was the end of the fun for that day! The Johnson 50 motor ran like a champ for about 5 minutes in the lake. My brother has since replaced the shredded impeller ( I blame the previous owner) and have learned my lesson about running a dry motor for brief periods, I promise. The issue now is that the motor has no spark, and was wondering if this motor has a fail safe built in, where a relay pops if it gets dangerously hot. ( I should add that it appears the previous owner may have disconnected the alarm wire, so no alarm ever sounded, which leads me to believe he may have had cooling issues prior.) I am hoping that someone can direct me to what to look for or test once a motor has cut out after getting so hot, and will not spark anymore. Any help is appreciated, and will never run a motor dry again! Thanks. Slash

Start with a compression test and report the test results to this thread. There are some really sharp guys (I'm not one of them) here and they'll help you out.
Good luck.
