so far i have put in new plugs and wires, new water pump, fuel pump, coil packs, carb rebuild kits, thermostats, and primer bulb and hose. All of which made a big differance how my engine was performing. But it still seems like it is running a bit rough. The motor sat for about 8 years without beig used, and has low hours of use. When i run wot it runs fine then after 5 to 10 minutes i seem to lose power, with the throttle all the way up i'm only getting a quarter of the power. That will only last a short time then i can open her up again. Is there anything you can suggest i do to make it idle smoother, and stop the lose of power. thank you fo any help.

I have the exact same engine. Make sure you are using a 50/1 mixture for your gas. Sounds like your floats need adjusting in the carb.

Check the primer bulb when it bogs down. If its sucked flat, there is a fuel restriction between the bulb and the tank pickup.

Re: 1989 johnson 88 spl HELP

I have the exact same engine that had also sat for a few years. I had two problems that haunted me. The first was that I put new plugs in but not the recommended champions. i used NGK. Even though the plugs I used were "compatible", they would just not run right.

The other was that the boat had also sat for a few years and with the new additives in the gas, the gunk from my tank kept fowling the carbs. If that is the case with yours, try it on a portable gas tank to see if it gets better.

Also make sure your gas tank vent is not partially clogged.

I have finally gotten it running great, but could not have done it with out the help of many people here on this site.

Good luck!
