hi. its me. yes i am a pain. get over it :p (im picking this motor up on tuesday)

how are the oil inject systems for these ol' girls? are they reliable? ive never had oil injection before. all my motors are and have been 50:1 . i have the clymer service manual from my old merc 115 that covers the same motor.

should i leave it be? should i disconnect? i feel 110% safe mixing it myself if need be.

if the low oil alarm works, what other "devices" would i need for oil injection as saftey devices.

any responce is appreciated.

mike

Re: 1989 mariner 80hp 3cylinder oil injection question

I'm going to assume that's like the 75 and 90 triples. That 75 triple is the most powerful 75 2-stroke I've ever operated! Never saw an oil injection gear fail on anything under a V-6. The V-6s have a motion sensor that will sound the alarm if the pump drive stops, but the only oil warning you'll have is for low oil in the tank. So how would you know if the pump wasn't working? You wouldn't. The motor would shred itself. That motor is getting along in years. Wear is definately worth considering. I'd pull the pump and look for shreds of gray plastic around the pump drive inside the motor. If you pull the drive out, you should be able to see the crankshaft gear. But they're very reliable as a rule.

If the fuel pump still has black paint on the diaphragms outside the housing, rebuild it.

If you do disconnect it, put a 50:1 sticker by the fuel fill. Force motors had one. I don't have a part number, but it should be easy enough to look up at a Merc dealer. I used to keep several in stock for just that reason. Mostly for rigging boats with Forces and certain Johnson SPLs, but a few for premix conversions.

Good Luck!
