1989 MAXUM 20' bowrider has major oxidation on the burgundy/maroon hull. What is the best remedy? Rubbing compound then a cleaner then a good coat of wax? Will that do it? Help

Ayuh,.... You'll probably have to wet sand it, then polish, then wax,...

Then do it again next year, 'n the year after, 'n,.....

Reds are the Worst colors to preserve,...

Ya might consider Paintin' it, but that's another very long story,...

I'm going to say VASELINE just to get a bunch of responses.....:joyous:

Like Bondo said, you're going to have to give it some elbow grease with compounding, buffing, and waxing. For a long term solution, which probably isn't in the cards for a '89 boat, you could look at painting or a vinyl wrap.

Vasoline is your Friend! ;)

Maddie was in big bold white tape letters on this boat, once it was off, underneath was the original deep blue color, Vaseline brought all color, & shine, back as you can see.

I like to begin with Maguires oxidation remover followed by 3m finesse it with a high speed buffer and then a top coat of marine synthetic wax. I my dad has a 1978 Bayliner that shines like new when its done. If it is really bad start with 1000 grit 3m disc orbital wet sanding. I use a cheep electric 5 inch sander and a spray bottle on the gelcoat. keep the electric sander dry! I have done over 50 other boats with the same process.

I had similar results to MikDee on the small section I used it on.

Fastest thing I have used is Gibbs penetrant. It's kind of pricey for a spray can but it does a great job. My 1990 Sea Nymph 195 GLS was heavily oxidized when I got it. It looks fantastic now, used less than a quarter can for the whole boat. Old cotton T shirts to wipe it with. I spent two hours on the whole thing.

I used Vertglas on my old Skeeter ... It shined like new, and stayed that way for another 8 years ... I sold it, so don't know how much longer the oxidation stayed away ...
