I recently had a new power head installed. The first time i took it to
the lake we could not accelerate past 2000rpms. When we tried to
go full throtle it would die but it would always start back up.
Took back to the mechanic and he was finding no problems.
We took the boat back to the lake again and tried to accelerate from
the dock and could only get 1500 rpms before it would die, attempting
to do full throtle. After 30 minutes of trying to get the boat on plane
we eventually succeded and were able to break in the motor using
the break in procedure. After consuming approx. 27 gallons of doulble
oil fuel as required, we stopped the boat and from idle position we
could not get back on plane and had to motor back to the ramp at
1000 rpms.
Is this possibly a stater problem??? My mechanic is reluctant to put
it on cause he is unable to find a problem on the dyno.
Can you help me diagnose this. These mechanics come highly recommended
but I am frustrated. Any help you can give I appreciate.

I have an 87 XR-2 with similar problems. I had my stator changed with no luck in fixing the problem. 99% of the suggestions were about fuel. I am going to rebuild my fuel pump in a few days. So maybe that is where your problem lies. Check it all from air leaks to in you fuel lines, possibly the fuel pick up line in the tank. Good luck.

Ok so what is the purpose of a stator. I believe my problem is electrical. It seems to be inconstint with a fuel problem. sometimes it jumps out of the hole shot and sometimes not. Wants to die after 1500 rpm and sometimes dogs for a 100 yds at 2800 rpm before going on plane. ?

The stator supplies the power to both the battery charging circuit and the switchboxes. It is one of many parts in the ignition, but one of the most expensive and also the most labor to replace. Any GOOD mechanic can test the stator with a DVA and tell you if it's good or not. Either you need to fire your mechanic and do it yourself, with the help of a factory maintenance manual, or find another mechanic.

That said, the most probably cause of something like that is intermittent fuel problems caused by dirty or disintigrating parts. Systematic troubleshooting should get to the actual bad part(s) the quickest and cheapest way.

hope it helps
John
