1989 Sea Nymph Fishing Machine - repainting tips wanted!

I've been reading a lot of different things on the forums as far as what I should do with a boat I just bought. It's only got the original paint job on it which is very old now, but I'm assuming if I give it a good sanding I can just paint over the existing paint. Another concern is the raised letters on the side that say "Sea Nymph Fishing Machine", will these sand off? And do people repaint the words back on?

So, if I go the route of sanding the top half of the boat and repainting, what should I use for a primer if I'm not completely taking the whole thing down to bare aluminum? I don't have a sprayer, so I'm probably going to be rolling or brushing on the new paint.

This will be used primarily in fresh water, and will be removed from the water after each use...I'd love any and all advice, even if I didn't ask for it specifically - everyone on this forum has been great with my questions so far - so thank you all.

Ayuh,.... Sand the current paint Smooth, 'n reprime, 'n paint it...

Yes, I use Rustoleum, start to finish...

The letterin' is probably a sticker that can be peeled with a heatgun or hair dryer...

Thanks. Would you recommend rolling or brushing? If I'm doing the topside do you think 2 quarts of paint is enough?

If I wanted to repaint the whole boat white, with just one stripe of blue around it to add some "flair", would you guys use painters tape or just try to do it by hand with a brush? i've never had luck with painter's tape painting walls in a house, it always seems to let paint under it.

Use the green frog tape. It's well worth the $$$ they charge for it.

Id tape it out, and use the Frog Tape like EZ mentioned.

There are also boat decals/stripes you can get too, so you could save some time and just do the white. There are also SeaNymph decals to be found on Ebay with multiple sizes and color options if you want. I can find the sellers and give you a link if you wish.

Welcome to the site by the way! Fellow Mainer-Nymph owner here.

Thanks Mobee! Wood, I used your recommendations and rolled it on. I sanded it down, I used self etching primer for any bare aluminum, I then used a Rustoleum clean metal primer. I was using the 6 inch fine foam rollers you can get at Lowe's for painting cabinets, they worked really well. I then used Rustoleum oil based paint with the appropriate mixture of Acetone and paint hardener. I found by using this mixture that Wood recommended, I was able to put two coats on the boat with one quart of paint. I did use the frog tape for my line where I separated the white and blue, and it worked great except for a couple of spots where the rivets were in the way...

The letters were custom vinyl from http://doityourselflettering.com/. Great quality and really quick shipping if anyone's interested! The whole process took me about three weeks because it was raining a lot here in Maine over the last month...but it's worth it!

The trailer is next for a makeover when I can figure out where to put the boat!

Thanks Piece, I've only had it in saltwater one time looking for some Stripers (striped bass), but had no luck. Mostly kept it close to shore though and near the end of a river - I'm not brave enough to take it too far out!

I'm usually just putting around the lakes and ponds around where I live (literally 6 bodies of water within 10 minutes from my house), and I've only been out bass fishing so far. I just got a new fishfinder and downrigger hooked up, so I'm going out for some lake trout and landlocked salmon next week...

The paint is holding up great, there are no flakes or peeling, it looks invincible! I still need to redo the crappy trailer, but since I'm able to use the boat now, the trailer seems like an afterthought...
