Hello, New to this site and has been helpful thus far. I'm in the process of purchasing a 89 vision with the 2.3 motor and cobra outbaord. This boat has sat for last 2 years uncovered, the interior shows it. Floor is'nt to bad but could use replaced along with some side boards. Guy said he parked it cause it kept draining the battery, Now could I take alt. off and have it tested just like a car battery? This have many problems like this? Also trying to download the manuals but for some reason cant open em. Like to see what all i should do as far as tuneup and the process? This is my 3rd boat but only toke the 2nd one on water once as to there was problem with that. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. A good place to get parts and such be wonderful. Thanks

I don't have any pics at the moment. I went and looked at it and motor oil was clean. Motor itself has all paint on it and looks good, as to not having oil/ grease every where. Its at a very nice camp ground. The guy told me it kept running the battery down and didn't have time to mess with so parked it and never messed with it. For it being uncovered for 2 years the interior isn't bad but sure once get in it and sit it'll crack pretty good. Betting if was covered it would been very good interior. I'm leaning towards getting it, price is fair. Just hope don't come bite me in the butt.

Is anyone else having problems downloading the manuals? Want to do a tune up and filter/fluids before trying to start for first time.

Here's the boat. And is it alright to take the alternator off and have it bench tested at auto store?

There are very few parts for that particular engine. It was only used by OMC for a few years, no one else used them. The outdrive lower unit was also smaller than any of the other Cobra drives. OMC went out of business in 98.

Yes you can have it tested. I doubt that that will reveal the true problem however. Think about this for a second...decent looking boat and trailer and he stopped trying to have it fixed? And now he wants to sell it? That story doesn't make sense. First off it's an OMC. That company folded in 1989 or thereabouts. I bought a rig with an OMC in it but I heard it run and went on the water with it first. If you can't hear it run head in the other direction. Or not...

Yeah all boats are money pits! I've owned 2 other boats but only went out once between em both. Got this so can take the g/f and kids out in summer, give us something new to do. Wasn't sure if this particular boat/motor had problem with something draining the battery. But Im sure ill trace it down "IF" that's the deal. The couple was Little older and seemed like good people. I toke it upon myself to take there word on what was there problem with the boat, if it back fires on me then that's my problem. Got what I feel is a good deal and willing to take the time and put some money/work into it. I'm currently laid off so it'll give me something to toy with.

Only one I can think of was one called "Dad's" back in the mid 70's. I never spent a dime.:D

I guess I didn't look at it that way and I hope this person has a good one! The issue that I was speaking of is the cost and time searching for obsolete parts.

Hey mzahn, Is there place or place's you recommend for getting parts for these omc? I've found a couple place's online and checked for price of alternator and there up in the 300's. I'm not positive to that's the problem just doing some research at this time. Thanks

Well I went and looked the boat over lil more today, found the exhaust bellow had cuts threw every rib , and there is a hole on bottom of boat. Found out bellow supposed to be like that. But this hole is stumping me right now. It's a perfectly round hole and about size of my pinky, also its on starboard side and right at the edge where motor is boxed in. Ill try and get pics tomorrow as phone didn't have enough charge to take pics.

Re: 1989 vip vision 2.3

Was a beautiful day here today, so cleaned boat up little. Got most of interior cleaned up for now. In the process I hooked a battery up to her, this is what I got. Batt. gauge worked, fuel guage worked. the tilt gauge stayed to up didn't move. The bilge pump kicked on, blower worked. And the cd player and speakers jammed lol. On that note he did have the cd player wired start to the ign. 12v so was on constant. So hooked it to an acc. when ign. is on. I took alternator off to have tested but neither autozone or advanced said they could test it. But while i had the alternator off I grabbed the crank pulley and was able to turn the motor over by hand pretty easy. So Now I'm stuck on waiting for this cold weather to stay away so can hook it up to muffs and see what she does.

You need to try and turn the motor by hand, or with a breaker bar. Take out the plugs, squirt some lube into the cylinders and find out if it will turn.

Here are some pics of the motor. Was little curious about the engine mount on the port side, It has a piece of plywood on bottom of engine mount. One more thing I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the water drain plug of the drive. I've sprayed some pb blast around the screw and still can't get the darn thing out. Any help would be greatly aprreciated
