I just bought a boat with a 1989 Yamaha 225hp v6-2.6L Excel outboard. The motor runs fine once it is started. It has good compression and new carburetors. It has a hard time starting when cold.Dual batteries are fully charged.I also checked the spark plugs and they are all sparking, but there was an oil/gas mixture on all of them. Also there is a lot of smoke once it is started. I am using Pennzoil marine 2-cyc oil.Would changing to yamaha oil make a diffrence?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

how are you starting it?
starting procedure is critical on that engine.

I first pump the primer until firm, then I hit the starter. If the engine does not start i then try it with the choke on. I usually leave it a little accelerated.

Thank you for answering quickly.

Re: 1989 Yamaha 225hp Excel

I am going to change the spark plugs but the problem is that the original ones are NGK BR9HS-10 which are not marine. Should I buy the NGK's or should I buy similiar plugs from champion which are marine use? Any suggestions on the oil and smoke?

Re: 1989 Yamaha 225hp Excel

I am going to have to see if that engine uses prime start or not, I dont think it does, when cold if it has a choke it must be used on a two stroke if its NOT a prime start version. if its primestart the choke swith has no effect on the motor. have a dealer or a tech look in the 84-99 tune up spec guide. the guide will state whether or not that engine has prime start. if it does you crank it at idle, if it does not you prime the system, advance the throttle so it starts at about 1500-2000 RPM and hit the choke and hold it while cranking.

The NGK BR9HS -10 are the correct plugs for that engine. It does have the choke system with no primer. Rodbolt is as usual correct in the suggested startng procedure at the last of his reply.

Re: 1989 Yamaha 225hp Excel

thanks Ray
after some thought it dawned on me that my 225 89 model exel has manual choke. so the correct starting procedure is advance the throttle, your target range is 1500-2000 RPM at start up, prime the system ,turn the key on, activate the choke and turn the key to start while holding the choke activated. if its hard to start that ay its time to look at why. could be a bad fuel pump diaphram creating an over rich condition, could be varnish in the carbs, could be bad check valves in the oil pump causing oil to leak into the intake. could be bad recirc check valves in the block. but most the time its the starting procedure used, if its cold a two stroke must be choked or they dont start well at all.
if any cable connections are going bad you will find the starter will draw enough current the choke solinoid wont keep the shutters closed. a quick test is to try to start it with the manual choke. if it starts ok with the manual choke start hunting electrical problems in the choke solinoid circuits and make sure the physical location of the solinoid allows the shutters to be fully closed.

rodbolt-

If you could, tell me more about these recirc valves. You seem to place some importance with them and that if they are not in good shape you motor with soon join the same fate.

Is there a simliar arguement for late 80's merc's (mine! :D )
