ok firstoff i am so glad i found a fourm for the force outboards. i would first off like to intraduce myself and give you all some background info on this wonderfull HORRID stoy..

i bought a 1990 18 foot bayliner 20 inch transit and a nice looking 120hp force outboard the motor is also a 1990. i went to pick up the boat and the guy let me take it for a test ride, and pointed out that the exaust manifold gasket leaked. took it for a short lil spin and it rode quite nice. so i bought it and took her home, replaced the gaskets and bingo time to take her out on the water. oh yes the pleasure of my first boat...

so i took it out for a spin, was running real nice.. then BAM... felt like i hit a brick wall.. looked all around i was in 16 feet of water so i know i didnt hit anything, wtf could it be? try and start it back up... nope the moter wont turn over... ok now im a lil worried... so i got the paddle out and paddled back to the docks.. ugh what a workout! took it home pulled the plugs figured maybe the gasked wasnt in properly and might have gotten hydro locked... NOPE pulled the plugs and all cilinders have compression... but turns over real hard.. what could it be? next pulled the plugs on the lower... BINGO a teaspoon of oil and lots of water :(

so i called around and no one would touch the lower.. so i broke it down myself and found that the gears in the lower are fine as far as i can tell.. but there are two timkin berrings on the down shaft that seized.

does anyone have the lash settings or pitch for when i put it back together? or even a breakdown on the lower? every shop i called just tried to sell me a new moter or told me for them to fix it would be 3 grand... haha what a joke.. for a 20 doller bearing! wile i have it apart im going to replace the water pump also..

any tips would be greatly appreacated! also attached a pic of my new toy.. i love the boat just wish i could have drove it for more than 3 min... ugh.

thank you in advance

shawn...

Well, First off, that should be a dual exhaust lower unit. If it is, the top bearing alone is 45 bucks or more at a bearing supply store. Backlash on the gears should be .005. Tolerance on bearings is such that after installing the new upper bearing, if you re-use the shims, the backlash should be correct. Do not lose or damage the shims--they are not available.

Lower bearing should be loose rollers in an outer race and riding on a hardened surface of the driveshaft. Don't know what they cost.
