:(My dad and I had just gone out fishing yesterday in his old (approx.1954)14' aluminum LONESTAR boat and 1990 15 horse Evinrude motor (that has ultra, super LOW time on it). We went out to Niantic, Ct., launched the boat and cruised to a few fishing spots. when I was at about 2/3 throttle, I hit a submerged rock. Sure woke me up! I stopped and inspected, looked fine though a couple scratches... We dropped anchor, fished and decided to go back to our original spot. Fired up the engine (ran great) and full throttle towards our old destination. I was about 7 minutes in when I heard the engine rev and we were losing momentum, sort of like a car transmission slipping, the revs will come up and also lose momentum... I would reduce throttle and gain back the forward momentum. This "slipping" kept happening and getting bad enough that I wasn't sure if we would make it back. Engine still runs like a champ. Any ideas? Sorry for the long winded explaination. I believe in more info the better... Thanks guys

could be your shear pin or the rubber core on your prop, I am not sure if your motor has either, but a lot of my motors do. both are easy to fix, the shear pin is steel (sometimes brass) rod about 2 inches long, and the rubber core on the prop can be fixed by re-coring - a process that takes special tools and is typically handled by a pro. Both require taking the prop off.

just looked at the diagram of your motor. you do not have a shear pin. you have spun the prop. they have an inner metal hub, outer hub with the fins, between is a pressed rubber bushing. hitting the rock the bushing did what it is designed to do, and protected the lower unit. service center or prop shop, can recondition the prop, like new, or buy a new prop. i carry a spare prop in all my boats just for this reason.

Agreeing, it's gotta be the prop hub unless it is making a lot of noisy grinding sounds. The prop hub is the only thing in the motor that can slip.

The rock may or may not have not had anything to do with it. The rubber is bonded to the center hub. If it tears loose from the center, it slips. It is designed to be able to hit rocks without tearing loose. Stuff just happens sometimes.

As a point of interest, if you suspect you have a spun the prop the best course of action is to proceed at a slow rate of speed and return to shore and the boat ramp if possible. In the event the prop quits responding altogether, sometimes you can put it in reverse and go a little farther as the rubber will grab and hold for a short time. I once went 2 miles in reverse and made it to my launch point.

Thanks guys, I was starting to sweat a bit :p. I can deal with a $100.00 repair :). It shouldn't take long to install another prop. Then it's fishin' time again :D, away from the rocks !
