I purchased a T&T unit off of a 1990 155 to install on my 1980 75horse. I had a 3 wire trim-only unit on it, but the new unit is a 2 wire set up. I don't have the control box for the new unit, but in doing some research on the boards it looks like all I really need is the two relays that come in the control box to make it work. Can someone advise if this is a correct assumption? Thanks in advance!

That is correct. Do you have the little black control box?

Hey Branden I believe all you need is two wires. I think one is blue and the other is probably red. The 3rd wire on your old unit is probably black for ground, that's not needed as long as the frame hinge that it mounts on is properly grounded. Two wire is all you need, one extends the piston, the other retract's it. Test it out first, ground the case to the battery, touch the blue wire to positive side of battery that should move the trim piston one way, than touch the other wire to positive and it should move the piston in the other direction. If everything works during your test, you can permenantly wire it to you boat.

Thanks guys!

No, I don't have the control box for the unit, I should have asked the seller on eBay for that.

WDM, I'll try that for a test, thanks! I'll probably still get the relays so I can use lighter gauge wire to my switches, but thanks for the clarification on the operation!!

That will damage the unit. The two wire system works by reversing polarity on both blue and green. The two relays switch between positive and negative on the blue and green wires depending on which way you flip the switch.

You have to duplicate that ability with whatever you set up.

You can either use the correct system, add another solenoid to your existing system, or use a modern reversing solenoid.

Ezeke, thanks for the head's up. I figured by glancing at the schematic I found and lack of a ground wire on the motor that it was grounding through the relays, but didn't know about reversing the polarity. Should be pretty easy to rig something up. Thanks!

Ezeke, found a reversing solenoid on clearance at an RV component supplier site. I believe it's made for the hydro controls on a slide out, so I think she'll work like a champ for my T&T unit! Price was right at less than $25 with shipping. Thanks for the idea!!:)

Thanks for the link! The one I bought is a bit different than some that I saw - has 4 main lugs and 3 small connectors but from the pic it looks fairly well marked. I'm assuming it has 2 main lugs for the motor and 2 for the battery connections, but hopefully it comes with some directions instead of me having to spend a half hour with a meter to figure out what's going on with it:D

Thanks again for that info, saved me a lot of time and probably several bucks in solenoids at the dealer!

Here's the link to the one I found..

Got the new solenoid in and tested it out - works like a champ! Hopefully I have time this week to get it on the boat!

Found a 20A circuit breaker as well that I'll throw in. Thanks again for the info!
