Sorry, bad news, it wasn't me. I had another commitment, kids singing in a school thing and missed it all.

I am watching the other two yet. The other one in Wisconsin sold for even less. The next two don't come up for a couple days. I will get one of them, hopefully.

985685 is for a 1989 4.3, would be perfect for you. Be leary of the one that has that model # and lists it for a 5.0/5.7, either he is wrong or the upper has been rebuilt with different gears or someone did something crazy with a different prop but the gear ratio is quite different. The 983844 is for a 1986 5.7 big dfference in the gears.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the help. Where did you find that info? Will it be covered in the service manual when it arrives, or only for 1990? (it is a 1990 service manual)

OMC only puts relevant info for that year in their manuals. This info comes from one of the aftermarket manuals (actually on CD), one of the few things these manuals are any good for

Hi Gary,

The manual came in today. I have spent about 5 hours just pouring thru it. Interesting, learning all the names for things. I have gotten pretty good at rebuilding lower units for older outboards, but this sterndrive is amazing in it's complexity.

I also learned that there isn't much you can do without a truck full of special tools.

I am really curious now to pull the sterndrive and get it home to take a look at it. Maybe this weekend. Maybe it is just the upper gears (but I don't think so...!)

I have a set (2) cobra drives 1 is a counter rotater, have the complete 4.3 package ....just upgraded to mercs will sell you the whole assembly CHEEP! got to get them out of the yard! make me a reasonable offer and they are yours

Pulling it is a 20 minute job unless the input shaft is rusted to the coupler.

That manual is great huh?

Take it home and pull the cover off the upper and take a look.(4 bolts)
