1990 40 h evenrude tracker model te40elesr- is it hard to change the seals in the Lu?

Did u remove the shift linkage bolt? It's probably under the powerhead.

If you got water out of the LU then you're going to have to pressure test it and find out WHERE the water is getting in.

Find the shift linkage bolt up under the carb. Remove it. It will be a pain.
Make sure the 5 bolts that hold the gearcase up are out. One is hidden under the trim tab.

is it normal to have somne water come out of the lu drain plug? new to boating but mechanically inclined. i love tearing into stuff, just need a little assistance on this forum thing?

No, the water in the gearcase is not normal. Not unusual, but not normal.
It is normal for the unburned gas oil goo to ooze out of the exhaust areas. The goo is usually black and smells like gas. Gear oil is brown and smells like sulphur.

do i have to remove the starter to access the shift linkage bolt. would you think there is a bad seal somewhere? and how much cost to have it repaired?

will it hurt too run it on the lake, keeping an eye on the gear oil or maybe changing it out.

how much can i run the motor with some water im the gear case

i pulled the drain on the lower unit and about a half cup of water came out prior to the oil. can i still run the motor, keeping an eye on the oil condition, with out additional harm or is it in need of immediate repair?

You better reseal it quick.

The correct answer is that you need to redo the seals promptly. If you want to play the eco game, every ounce you loose from the gearcase is polluting the water you are in.

I have water in the gear case, what do i check for and how to remove shift linkage bolt. What else should i change after removed? Just got the boat. Average cost on a seal kit for lu, done by shop?
Model#te40elesr. 1990 40 rud

Have to start with the year of the motor.Or a model number Usually appears on the top front of mount bracket.
