Hello I'm hoping I can get a straight answer here but anything will help, I have a 1990 40hp evinrude vro. I turn the key and I get a constant ringing that does not stop. I haven't even turned over the engine and the ringing starts. The engine starts and runs good, I get a good "pee" flow of water coming out and I can run it for the entire day but the ringing will go away and come back thought out the day. When I was out on the water running i would wiggle some wires underneath the helm and it would go away so I am not sure if it is just a wire getting a bad connection or what is going on. I'm not sure what wire to follow or what I should do. I called and talk to a mechanic at a local marina and he seems to think it is a oil sending unit? Which is part of the vro system? I'm not sure, I have never had to work on an outboard motor before so if anyone has any ideas regarding the issue I would appreciate if you could "dumb it down" for me thanks!

The constant alarm is indicating an overheat condition. There should be a tan wire at the cylinder head. Trace it as It sounds like it's grounding somewhere. I have the VRO alarms written down somewhere and I'll try to find it but I'm almost certain constant alarm is overheat. Best of luck. Rick.

Do a search with these words: (VRO Horn Warnings)(J. Reeves) I was wise enough once to print this and keep in it my battery compartment. Rick.

I removed the ground wire from the oil reservoir going to the motor and turn the key and the ringing stopped. I believe it's the oil pump in the reservoir which is 180$....so I will be leaving the vro un-hooked and just mixing gas using a 50:1 ratio. I used it this past weekend like that and the engine fired right up with no alarms

There's no oil pump in the reservoir, just some electronics which a lot of them were bad. The new sending units for the oil tanks just have an on/off switch to tell you when the oil is low.

You can check the sending units by pulling it out and leaving the switch in the down position. It is a little silver square right on top of the black sender. The warning chirp should buzz every 30 seconds (1995 and younger). Then you hold the lever up, and the chirp should stop. That will at least tell you if the oil level indicator is functioning.

I have heard that there is a difference between low oil and no oil warnings, but I couldn't seem to figure out how to test that function.............
