My main power on 16' fibreglass runabout is a 1990
50 hp 2-cylinder evinrude.
Motor runs good, and is well maintained.
question: what is the life expectancy of this type of engine ?
i was told you can expect about 15 years....
not sure if this is correct

thanks

Welcome to this forum.

Well maintained, these motors will last some place between 1500 and 3000 hrs. Some much more. You say average use of a pleasure boat is around 50 hrs a year. Lots of motors from the 60'ies still run. If cylinders get worn down, they can be rebuilded, cranck and bearings will last much longer.

Hi, C-RAVEN.

That 2 cylinder loop charged engine is/was one of the best outboard designs ever, and well ahead of it's time when introduced around 1970.

With regular preventive maintenance it should last 30-40 years. Many of the early 70s engines are still in regular use. The ones that aren't died of neglect or abuse. They haven't worn out.

You have a winner. Take good care of her and she will outlast you. :)
