Gentlemen, thank you all for sharing your wealth of knowledge but I still have a couple unanswered questions. 1 The tach on my boat is and aftermarket, I put it there at the encouragement of a repair guy at the local marina, he said it should work. Well it does but it my idle speed is around 3000rpm according to the tach. It does not matter where I set the little thingy on the back either. 2 fuel gage also lies, I replaced the sendng unit in the tank but it is still way off. New gage or live with it? Finally, the tilt and trim leaks down. How do I know whether I have a servicable pump or not?
Thanks
Fred T

Re: 1990 90 hp Force

1. You probably need an outboard tach for a 20 pole stator. Most newer outboard tachs are set up for 8 or 12 pole stators.

2. The gauge and sending unit need to be matched. Standard gauges require a sending unit that reads 240 ohms empty, 33 ohms full. The shape of the tank and location of the sending unit on the tank affects reading accuracy. My gauge will only read accurately when I'm stopped and boat is level. When under way, it reads higher than it really is. You also may have to fine tune it by bending the float arm slightly.

3. Most of the tilt/trim units are serviceable. There are quite a few postings on the trim/tilt issues.

Re: 1990 90 hp Force

The motor is a 1990 90 hp force and it is mounted on a 19ft. Spectrum. We use the rig for fishing and joy riding. I am still not sure whether I have a trim unit with a spool valve in it or there is something else in the bottom of the pump housing. AS far as the fuel sending unit it is way newer than the gage so I think a new gage is in order. I spend some time prety far up north in Canada so knowledge of fule consumption is pretty imprtant.
Thanks for the help
Fred
