Just as I came up on plane hit about 30 mph my sterring fork broke off at the shaft /stem that the arm mounts on. Put us on a hard 180 turn till I yanked the throttle back. Nice 2nd ride on the carver 2157.These things break often? need a new fork #852852 and the little gear for the trim sender. Disasembly time has been cut down somwhat helme and fork in my hands.Fell out! stem is stuck in stern plate and sterring arm. Any easy disasemble/reasemble short cuts? any aftermarket parts?

These things break often?

I was a Volvo certified tech working in Volvo shops for a lot of years and never heard of one breaking before. But there have been lots of things on cars, trucks, boats, trains, and planes that do break. Even if it's not common.

Nope, no aftermarket parts for what you need. Might want to post some pictures so we can see what all you are up against.

As you can see its a question of drive the rest of the stemP6250050.jpg up or down. I have little room inside (swim platform)to work with.

May have found a used fork. I wish I had answers to why this thing failed. I checked for any binding it turns freely although the pawl is not working correctly. When I turn the drive to left or right and lift it comes up. Salt water !

I had the same issue with the pawl. It turned out to be a hose clamp not installed in the same location as the manual required and it lifted the lock shaft just enough when the outdrive was turned.
It was a pain because I'm always reversing with the drive turned while docking.

I've never heard of the post breaking either, I wouldn't expect a used one to be a problem.
Replace the rubber washers and grease before reinstalling.
I drove the stem out of mine (different issue not broken) down thru with a pipe and sledge. Came out easy as soon as I had someone hold the pipe properly to get the right angle and hit.

Got the steering fork from ebay today ready to reasemble. any tips for setting trim sender(gear driven from helmet) part #828726. Set it up wrong and it looks like you could run it past its stops and ruin it. On the bright side it came with one and now I have a spare.

Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! EXACTLY what I was looking for Mr Don ! I just got that broken steering fork stem (stub) out. A little tap up a little tap down. Now my steerng was way out of wack because it broke off , it is not at all centered and I do have power steering. Done for the day. In the AM I hope to finish up. Hope I will find everything In the manual thanks again.

Ok I'm done ! but I found that the tiller arm (inside the boat) was rusted solid at the steering cable pin and the power steering pin. Removed it, and was like it was welded solid. A 4x4, a shot of PB,punch them out, greese and were good to go! The Boat steers super easy with the engine turned off. It did not before. Now the manual was very useful, marks on the trim sender and plastic gear plus start point on plastic rack gear at -4, drive all the way down. Nice ! My steerig fork however did not have the flat or square. But the fork has a punch mark (0) on top of the stem that lines up with holes drilled that line up with a greese fitting in the tiller arm. Did that and it ended up on the money with a full sweep side to side and centered nicely. Happy now!
