Hey, Guys,

I'm a newbie to the forum, but I've been reading it for a while and I need some guidance. I recently purchased a 1990 Stratos 270 FS with an E120TLESB that has zero compression on the #2 cylinder. I just pulled the head and can't see anything obvious on that cylinder other than it looks like it needs rings. The cylinder is coated in a black residue that looks like blow by. In comparison, the #4 cylinder is clean but has the same black residue in a neat 1/8" ring around the top of the cylinder. I can't see any obvious damage or cylinder scoring. This engine is imaculate and I'm hoping that I can resurect her pretty quickly. Do you think that a ring job and a decarb might do it?

Thanks!

Denny

Denny,Wish I was there to look at it.You can always reassemble it with a new head gasket, and recheck compression. If still zero, most likely internal dsamage.

DHP

If the compression picks up after you put it back together, as it should, do a deacarb.

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to get setup so I can post a couple of pics to show the current condition. I'm going to pick up a set of rings and new head gasket to see if it gets me back in operation. I'll redo the compression check.

Denny

I finally got a picture posted. I'm curious if its possible to remove the carbs/intake manifold as a unit in order to get to the rod bolts. I have an OEM manual, but I can't really tell if its possible.

Thanks for all the help.

Denny

Don't believe you can resurrect that piston. Pull it and I believe you'll find the rings and piston all messed up on the side of those scuff marks.

Yes you can get to the rod bolts without pulling the powerhead and get the piston out. But then what? How are you going to bore it? Hone it? Clean it? Get the rod cap repositioned (even if you get the other stuff done)?

Save youreself some time and a bunch of aggrivation -- pull the powerhead and do it right. Thats a very nice freshwater motor, youll have no problem at all taking it apart.

BTW -- find out what caused that and fix it so we dont have a repeat performance. See all the scuffing by the exhaust port? Thats a clue.... and so is the black goo...
