I have a 1990 Evinrude XP 100 which runs very well. Upon its initial run this year the timing pickup locknut came loose and the rod vibrated itself all the way to the end. While the motor runs well above (>1100 RPM) to top end (5500 RPM), the idle is a little rough due to the pickup being out of adjustment. (I reconnected the pickup rod and shortened it down slightly which began increasing the idle speed and allowed the motor to idle.) Can I use an automotive timing light (NON-inductive) to hook up to the motor (#1 plug) and adjust the timing (at idle) to get the timing back to its specification? (All of the other linkage ajustments remain ok.) If I can adjust the timing in this manner, what is the timing spec when adjusted at idle? Appreciate some input on these thoughts.

The idle timing is used to set the idle. You need to set it so that the engine will idle at 650 in gear, sitting in the water. It's probably going to be 4 degrees +- one degree.

Thanks for the input on the timing and RPM reading (in gear). For the 4 degrees +/- one value, is that BTDC? I also assume the older (non-inductive) timing light is ok to use.

The actual number at idle isn't critical. Just set it so the motor idles at about 650 in gear in the water. Yes, a standard timing light will be just fine.
