My brother in law called me last night, He is wanting to buy a bass boat from a guy at work that has a 1990 force 90hp. The guy he works with said that the motor starts and idles great, just no top end, he say it feels like it has no power. Sounds like clogged carb jets to me, but Im a idiot. I told my brother in law I would go look at it with him this weekend, whats would be some other things to check, we are taking a compression tester, anyone have any other ideas.

Compression test will tell you if the rings and cylinders are in good shape. For me, that's one of the most important determining factors besides the asking price whether or not I buy. Ideally, you should see a minimum of 120LBS compression on all cylinders.

If the compression numbers are good, and he is looking for at the least carb rebuilds, and say the trim works and everything else seems to be in order, whats a good value on this motor is it worth 1000.00 or does that seem a bit steep

Its a older bass boat not sure the make but to be honest the boat looks pretty rotten, but my brother in law has a really nice glasstream that he needs a motor for. The boat the force is on looks like junk to me maybe you could sell the trailer

Re: 1990 force 90hp

yeah but when we're done we'll basically have a new boat for a tenth the price.

pics start about page 3 http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/carver-2357-montego-636177.html

IMO $1000 and trailer alone for the motor is right on the edge. If, IF the motor is just a carb (seafoam is your friend) i'd say about $600 and a bass boat trailer about $400 so its a break even. Given that it is a Force, if you are just needing a motor, spend $ on one you know is good and parts are more avail.

Re: 1990 force 90hp

Be very wary: People always think they have gold and want to sell it for top price. Every junk engine I have purchased "Started and ran when it was last stored"

If I had that 90 and it ran well, I would probably ask 1000 and would probably take less. But as is? Who can say. I can tell you that the last Force 85 I sold was a 1985-86 and it went for 550 plus the trashed OMC 88 HP engine, and I mounted it on the purchasers boat.

As you say, compression will tell the story. Remember, It is going to cost you money to trash the boat--fiberglass boats in poor condition are almost impossible to sell-- so consider your offer well. If the seller does not want to budge, it just may be a walk-away.

he has come back and said 750.00 now we are going to look, check it the best we can and ether buy or walk. It would be a great fit for his boat, but Ive let myself get over excited before and made some dumb moves. Someone told me to try to see if the flywheel has any side to side movement at all, anyone ever heard of that.

I have not.

I replaced powerhead on mine years ago. Pretty easy to work on. At $750 and compression is good I would say you are fairly safe. Take five bens with you, leave debit/credit/checkbook at home. That way you can't pay more than that.

Wiggling the flywheel side to side would test for a worn top bearing. This is an almost unheard of condition. First off, to feel anything, all the bearings would need to be loose and that simply is not going to happen. Secondly, even though the top bearing is not oil fed, there is always enough splashing up there to keep it lubricated.

I did see ONE junker 50 HP where the ball cage broke and let the balls migrate to one side of the bearing and fall out, causing complete destruction. Even that engine did not have slop in the flywheel.
