What can you guys tell me about this motor. Good bad, things to look out for. I'm looking at an 1980 23' Robalo with a newly (last year under 50 hours) professionally rebuilt top to bottom 1990 225 on it.

What should I be looking for?

You should look for who rebuilt it and what they did.

As produced those were great motors for carb'd outboards. Gobbs of torque when set up right. Obviously youll be looking at compression, gear lube etc. All the usual things.

I would want to know -- why did it have to be rebuilt and was the cause of the problem fixed?

Will look at comp, lubrication, fuel side condition, etc. Going out this Sunday first go and will look for a water test next. Seems to be a very cconciencous gentleman, selling to go smaller boat size. He had the rebuild done and has all the records. I'll find out then and post back.

Is this a cross flow?

Its a big bore open deck 90 degree looper. It has Quick Start, SLOW and a rev limiter. Lots and lota of torque.

Found the boat to be a tad heavy for me to tow. 3800 lb hull (no motor, fuel, or trailer in that number). Motor rebuilt to eliminate slight vibration and serious smoke issue. Lower unit done becuase of reversing problem.

Too bad, everything looked great. I should have just bought a bigger truck.
