Hello Captains !
i have bought a 1990 johnson vro 3 cylinder, when i remove all the plugs and use the starter to turn over all sounds good, when i use a automotive compression guage (all plugs out) and turn it over with the guage screwed in one cylinder there is major load, as like it turns over slowly like a big load on, the same result on all 3 cylinders. Also there is no reading on the guage, am i using the wrong compression guage? with the plugs out i can turn the motor over without any strain or pain turning the flywheel by hand, the plugs look clean and good, no carbon etc.
What brought this on was a major loss of power while in the lake, i took it home slow and easy.

Ideas ? the next round of drinks is on me ! Thank you Benni

Crank with your thumb blocking the plug hole.
If you feel somewhat same pressure all over, try another compression gauge.
Are you sure the one you got is for a gas engine and not a diesel?
Ought to be in the area of a 100 PSI, but you need some cranking speed!

The mtr is not cranking fast enough. Bad battery, starter mtr or connections. Even if you have a diesel compression gauge the mtr should crank over the same.
