Hello, I have searched for hours over this subject but can't seem to find the answer i am looking for or what troubleshooting i need to do and where to start.

I have a 1991 15HP Force 2 Stroke that had been sitting for some time. Ran compression test, found one cylinder had low compression, blown head gasket, replaced, great compression now. Replaced spark plugs. Started right up.

Took out for the first time, ran great. Except for the last 15 min it started acting like it was missing. I thought maybe it was a carb issue. Got boat back to the garage and took off carb and cleaned. Sprayed down with carb and choke cleaner, took air wand to it and cleaned every possible crevise.

Took boat back out. Fired right up. Idled great, put into gear ran descent and troll speed and then when i throttle up it falls on its face, doesn't completely die but just shakes like crazy and won't get to full speed. From about 3/8 throttle and up just runs like crud.

Brought back to my garage, recleaned carb, put garden hose on in driveway, fired right up, could shift from forward and reverse and neutral and no dead spot what soever, could rev up and no dead spot.

Took boat back out and same thing again, just falls on its face a little before half throttle. I am lost on where to start trouble shooting from here. It seems to me that it is either a timing issue or a carb issue but i can't seem to pinpoint it. I have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge and all the tools but am lost when it comes to 2 stroke outboards.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Check for water in the gas?
The inline connectors can leak and suck air.I removed them and replaced with OMC.
Check the fuel pump diaphram.
I installed a small clear filter between the carb and the pump.

Re: 1991 15HP Force running iratically

The gas is brand new and I store the boat in my garage so I know moisture can not be collecting in the tank. As for fuel lines I have double and triple checked tightness of clamps to make sure there wasn't air sucking from somewhere. When I pump the gas bulb it gets firm and doesn't seem to bleed off like there is a leak somewhere. I took apart the fuel diaphragm last night just to make sure everything was OK there and I didn't see any problems.

Reving up in drive=OK timing. Stumbling under load (in water)= fuel starvation. Recheck your carbs, any quick release connections for fouling.

OK. So when I take off carb and flip it over and take off the bowl, correct me if I'm wrong but my main jet should be in the dead center and I should be able to remove this with a small flat head screw driver? There is a small brass like tube in the middle that doesn't allow me to fit the screw driver into the groves to unscrew. I don't know what it is or if it is defective?

Personally, I wouldn't do any removing. I'd just be sure the holes aren't plugged with some kind of debris.

Re: 1991 15HP Force running iratically

I don't know how i missed this before. So when i take the bowl off the carb, im really looking around to find any plugged holes.....and i don't know how i missed it but.....i realize there are threads there but no jet......wow. So my next question is, on the outside of the carb the idle jet is a .061, and when i look at the parts list online it says it should be a .048, is that ok that it is a .061? And what size jet should i get for the jet main? It says it should be a .066 with elev between 2500-5000. Will that work?

So another thought is that when i would crank the throttle up it was actually drowning itself out with fuel?

You've gone beyond anything I know. Hopefully some else will pick up the reigns.

Anytime. If you fill out your profile with location your elevation question might get answered.

Correction, idle jet size is a .050 not a .061. So i am not worried about it not being a .048 like the parts list requires because i think that is plenty close enough. I just need a recommendation for the main jet size. Will the .066 work? Thank you to all who reply in advance!

Re: 1991 15HP Force running iratically

Just wanted to give you all an update. Local marine store had a .066 jet. Put new main jet in. Put carb and motor back together. Took boat out this weekend and it ran flawlessly. One hell of a whales tail it threw out! Thank you all who had answered about my troubles. Hope this may help someone in the future!
