Hi,

First I should say I used to be in the power tool industry....

I need to test the armature of a '91 225 starter. I don't have access to a growler, so I'll have to do it the hard way with a multimeter. The problem is I am unfamiliar with the commutator pattern, there are 4 brushes, so how do I test?

The starter won't spin at all, even when removed and juper cables attached directly.

The soleniod is OK, as are both batteries. I have tried shorting directly to the starter terminals, still nothing. The field (permanent magnet) has a small chunk out of it, but this shouldn't make the starter fail completely.

It was having some trouble spionning the bendix up to the flywheel, so I suspect the armature may have a fault, breakdown of insulation perhaps?

Great forum!

Cheers,

Tim
