I just bought a boat with a 1991 Force 90HP outboard, and it has a very hard time starting. It turns over very slowly, sometimes just one or two turns. I have to constantly crank the engine at least ten times before it will even try to turn over any faster and then start. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Re: 1991 90HP Force Outboard

When I bought my 50hp force, it did the same thing. The starter would get real hot and you never knew if you'd get it spinning fast enough to start it. Eventually, I had to pull the cover and use a pull string to start it. I finally broke down and bought a rebuilt starter and my life is good now.

Obviously, there are other causes to slow spinning, but I knew mine was the starter because it would run just fine once going. You may try to rebuild yours, I spent $80 on a rebuilt one, but could have probably spent 1/4 of that rebuilding myself.

Look here for rebuild parts.. http://www.boatfix.com/engsections/chrysler.pdf#zoom=125

I do not have this boat any longer, but I did replace the old starter with a rebuilt one. The first rebuilt starter I bought, had a loose spindle gear on it, so it didn't work. I took it back, and they replaced it with another rebuilt starter. This starter worked great. Never had another problem starting the engine. It turned over like brand new. I bought my rebuilt starter from AABCO Automotive Remanufactures INC. 423-266-8549. About $70.

NAPA lists Starters And starter parts for Chrysler/Force. Not sure what motors they cover.
You should have a ser. manual before starting any repairs.NAPA has them as well.
