Re: 1991 BAYLINER deck rot question

I will take more pics of the sides and post them. I want to be confident I will get 10 years out of this boat before I have to worry about water seapage or hull strength. before I start on the stringers and deck, Thanks guys.

Water will not seap into your hull.
You could grind the bisters out,Let them dry and fill them .Its a easy job.dont worry about it so much.It wont effect your hull.

Re: 1991 BAYLINER deck rot question

This is my new plain. Seeing that most of the boat is gutted, Before I go ahead and start adding weight to it like starting on the deck, and so on, I want to remove as much wieght as possable, like the windsheild and so on, get some buddies over and lift the boat off the trailer and mock somthing up on the trailer to rest the boat upsidedown on the trailer, wheel the boat in to my garage and start taking the right steps to get rid of those blisters. what do you guys think? can the boat flip thing be done without recking the boat, i was thinking of rolling the boat over on some old bed mattresses.then resting it on the boat or a flat bed trailer. thanks

I just think it would be so much easier working on the boat if it were upside down, I would brace the cockpit dashes, so they are not flopping, and like I said remove the windshield, does any one know what wieght I am looking at? the boat is completly gutted, with the exception of the steering wheel. and wiring. thanks

darren......to properly remove the blisters you will need to remove all the gellcoat from the hull.....grind down the bare fiberglass....let the hull dry for a year. and then epoxy coat the hull.......and paint it.

i would pretend you didnt see the blisters.....just forget about them.....they wont sink the boat as island mike suggested.
\water will not seep into the hull.....never.

look at the link in my sig.....

it is a full gellcoat......start at page 27 on flipping the hull......and go for it......the reading will take a day......the work will take you much linger than you care to spend.

it took me 3 months with another pro helping. total cost was 600 for the gell....and 200 for sand paper....100 for the compressor and spray equipment.
and i paid a guy to shoot it. (now i do my own)

you will also need about 5 gallons of epoxy to do your boat hull.

after all that........there is no gaurentee that the problem will not come back.

I had a blister on my heel once from wearing too big of shoes! Didn't know boats wore shoes!!!!!! Seriously I'm with OOPS, would not worry and or touch those things.

Well you guys win I will try not to think I saw the blisters, but I will keep a close eye to track there progress, if any at all. oops I was reading your hull ext posts, nice work, you guys do not mess around, I like how you flipped the hull. by the way I also live in Canada, but Ontario. any ways I do have some other hull work that will need attention, I will post a pic, I have 5 or 6 spots that are close to the one in the pic, and also on the peek of the hull under the front of the boat the previous owner must of liked sand beaching the boat because I have a area aprox 6" - 8" long where the gel coat is sanded off but no damage to the hull itself, what would be the best way to fix these areas? I can post a pic of the front if you guys need it. thanks Darren

Re: 1991 BAYLINER deck rot question

Before moving on,I would like to add that I removed and filled blisters on two boats,a 50 foot sailboat,And a smaller one,Like darrens.
We dont have professional osmosis treatment facilities on the island,But we do have very hot weather!(90+ fahrenheit)
On these two ocassions the clients chose to simply open and grind away the zits,Clean,Let dry,and fill+sand. After that we painted the hull.No gel.We did not remove all the gelcoat but only where the blisters were. Now I know this could be just delaying the problem but its an option the clients chose. They were informed upfront that the blisters could reapear.I must add that most blistering was below the waterline..One of the boats is still around and the owner says its just fine and the blisters have not reappeared(yet) Sorry everybody for being the wiseass for bringing this up but I just wanted to share my experience! In darrens case I do agree lets move on!
