Re: 1991 Chev S-10 idling question

Dolluper...the "check engine light" does come on. I can start it, but it will die after a few seconds. If I try to give it gas to keep it going, it will die. If I floor it, it will stay running, but I hate to over-rev engines(and of course, after I let off the gas, it dies).
Last month I was able to get it running for 10 minutes, then it would all of a sudden rev really high (around 3500 - 4500rpm)

I just went out and checked the codes again. My cousin was helping me with the codes before; I don't think he held the paperclip in properly.

Here are the codes I got today.
Flash, pause, flash, flash
Flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash
Flash, flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, flash

Does this help now

Re: 1991 Chev S-10 idling question

Here are the codes I got today.

Flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash
15 Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature colder than -27 F for 30 seconds after the, engine has been running for at least 30 seconds.
check the connections on the temp sensor then check the voltage on both terminals
Flash, flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, flash
24 When engine speed was between 1200 and 4400 RPM and throttle position angle was less than 3%, the MAP signal showed low voltage (high manifold vacuum) for at least 5 seconds.
Possibly you working the throttle to keep it running

Buy a service manual too.:D

Thanks JCF350.
I do have a service manual. Are you saying these codes are in the manual, because I have not seen them in there (then again, I never looked either )

Might could be in there somewhere depends on the manual.

One side of the temp sensor will have 5V on it with the key on, and I don't remember off hand what the other side will read at temperature.
But with the fault code it tells me it's not connected at all as -27 is the temp reading with it unplugged.

Thanks JCF. I'll take a look at it on Tues after work and see if it is hooked up.
-27 sounded very odd to me as well, especially since it is nice and warm here!

Well that's better something to work with....The coolant temp sensor is very important during warm up also the TPS ....if the CTS is unplugged it will run real wacky since the computer uses the info from it until warmed up enough for the O2 sensor to take over control ....if you have to replace it {10 to 25 bones} some antifreeze will leak out {little bit} re-install with some teflon tape on the threads of the sensor but not completely covered ...I also think you playing with the gas is trowing the TPS code .....let us know eh

Re: 1991 Chev S-10 idling question

Well, today I checked the coolant temp sensor and the connections were not too good (they are a bit loose). I wiggled them around and started the truck. It started nicely, BUT then after 15 seconds it hesitated and died. Now it is hard to start, just like before.
I plan on buying a new sensor this wknd and installing it.

After I did the above, I tested the codes again and I just get code 12 and flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash.
That is all the codes showing now, so hopefully after replacing the sensor, it should run fine.
I will keep you all informed.

I can't go boating until I fix it and the weather is finally getting nicer out now!!

Edited for clarity.

Still gots code 15. If the connector don't fit tight get one of them too, might need to go to the dealer for that.

After repairs disconnect the neg post on the battery wait for 15-30 seconds and re-connect it. When you start it again it still may die a few times so leave the gas pedal alone and restart it. The engine computer needs to re-learn it's idle strategy.:)

Yeah, the connector is in pretty bad shape, after I took it off and looked at it.
I'll see if I can get a connector as well.

Re: 1991 Chev S-10 idling question

I went to take the sensor out and antifreeze came gushing out!!!
I thought only a little bit was going to come out??? I put the sensor back in right away!
I guess I have to drain the rad first?

LOL, funny. No I didn't have a pan underneath. It's all good, I cleaned it up. But at least I know what "a little bit" really is now. haha

Re: 1991 Chev S-10 idling question

Well, I went and got the sensor, only to find out that I had taken the "sender" off, instead of the coolant temp sensor! D'oh!!! I guess that is why the antifreeze came gushing out like I said.
Anyways, I replaced the sensor and took the neg battery terminal off and waited for a minute; put the battery terminal back on and the truck started and ran the way it supposed to!!!!
The "check engine" light is off and everything is fine now.

Thanks alot to everyone who gave me input to resolve this issue!

I'm back on the water in a couple weeks now!!!! woohoo!

And a special thanks to dolluper....you're input was very valuable! Thanks again!!!
