I have a 1991 Evinrude 20HP tiller that I just started up after putting a new water pump in it sat all winter. I just got it last fall ran fine for the 3 times I used it smoked like this then figured it was just a rich mixture the previous owner had in the existing tank. Is this smoke common for a 2 stroke at idle? It’s not warm here yet( in Ontario Canada 10c or 50f)so more of a cold start run in my garage. Seems to run and idle fine. Thanks in advance !

Thermostat in place and working properly ?-----Try running with cowling off.----Try leaning out low speed mixture.

It had a thermostat when it left the factory !!----Why afraid of adjusting the idle mix ?----It was put there for the owner to adjust to compensate for fuel quality and local atmospheric conditions !-----And no the low speed mixture has noting to do with damaging the motor.----Lean damage has nothing to do with low speed mixture.----That is a myth.----Your location ?

A lot of outboard motors are fogged when put up for winter storage. Perhaps it is fogging oil burning off.

It could also be last years mixed fuel or fuel with a winter storage additive. Both can smoke a lot.

I’m in agreement with all of the above.
Let it run for awhile and get up to operating temp before worrying about it to much.
Everything may just work it’s self out fine.

Yes, two strokes smoke! Means they have oil in them, haha, that's a good thing.

As the motor warms up the smoke will lessen as it has more efficient combustion.

Looks completely normal for me for a just started after winter motor, when it's cold. If this is new motor to you, you also don't know what they did, like maybe they used the correct technique and fogged the engine before winter storage which will make it smoke more.

yea i know they smoke and its a good thing so i know there is oil lol. im just going to get it in the water and let it run and warm up properly and see how she finds her way. And burn the existing fuel from the tank before making a true 50:1 mix on the next tank.

The nature of operation of a 2 stroke / lubrication in a 2 stroke is not well understood.

Or if you want to drain that out it in your lawnmower or if you have an old pickup or gas tractor or something. It won't hurt a thing. I get rid of old two stroke that is questionable all the time. For some reason people think it will ruin fourstroke a or they will be an oily mess for some reason?? Only thing that it will mess with is a vehicle with a catalyst, you don't want excess oil in them, if the vehicle is an oil burner already that doesn't matter as much. That way you can get fresh mix in faster.

yea usually if its like 10-15 litres(which it is) i will fill my truck with regular then just top it off with that so it weakens the mix
