It stopped dead. Not because it was hot but because the wires to the stator and trigger melted and shorted on the exhaust side..

It's got good compression still (thank god) but no spark. The stator and trigger have failed the DVM tests so I know it needs to be replaced..

is there any way of testing the CDI box? I am not sure the engine is worth the investment of both items.

I'll also be doing the impeller. When I lifted it after the overheat the lower unit was covered in thick weeds up to the water line. I was pulling them out of the water inlet.

No I do not think you can check the CD module without having a good stator and trigger.
Outboardignition.com and CDI electronics have the troubleshootchart and there it says you should measure the statorvoltage, triggervoltage and the output from CD module to coil.

Stator charge the capacitor inside CD module and triggersignal "opens the transistor in CD module" letting the capacitor discharge the voltage in to the ign.coil.

that is kind of what I figured. so the question is.. when the wires from the stator shorted.. what do we think died? I am thinking the stator bought the farm and the box "should" be ok.

Start to replace the stator and the trigger and se if you got spark.
If not change CD.....that?s life.
I do not know the configuration of the electronic inside the CD, BUT just a thougt a shortcut of the stator and triggersignals should not harm the CD module. But this is a longshot from me.
