I have started my motor at least 50 times this spring. 4 times it wouldn't start. Each time it happened after the engine has run and then is shut off for 10 to 30 minutes. After turning the motor over repeatingly, I wait 45 min. or more and it will start again. It acts like it is flooded. I took the plugs out and they were wet. If it flooding, what has to be done?

NGK - BZ7HS 10; I had the problem before and after I put them in. The gas is recent , but it has ethenal and it is 89 octane. Maybe that's the problem.

First of all lets get the right plugs in it. I use the Champion QL77JC4 in my 60* looper. Lets start there. Then, if the fuel is over 45 days old we need to get rid of that and start over. 87 octane is fine.

Thanks for the info..I'll change plugs. One other thing that I just thought of, does the type of 2 cycle oil make a difference?

lakeshetek- If you find the cause of your problem, I would appreciate if you would post it. I have a 1991 Evinrude 40 hp, two stroke that is doing the same thing. I have already tried the above remedies. Thanks

Re: 1991 johnson 150hp starting problem

As long as its a good TCWIII oil it should be OK. As far as protection goes even inferior oils shouldnt stop it from starting. Remember, motors used to run on 24:1 using 30 weight car oil. And those ignitions werent near as hot as what you have.

Lets get the right plugs in it and fresh fuel and review the starting proceedure. If you even think the carbs need cleaning -- do it.

DID YOU EVER FIGURE THIS PROBLEM OUT. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH A JOHNSON 150 OCEAN RUNNER. EACT SAME SYMPTOMS. Starts up and Runs fine, than I stop it for an hour or so and it wont start or make any noise other than beep warning at startup. Then 10 minutes later it starts fine.

Re: 1991 johnson 150hp starting problem

I had my boat out yesterday and I think I figured out my problem. I think I have an air leak in my fuel line because my motor started if I pump the fuel bulb. The bulb never got hard, so I replaced it and it didn't make any difference. I assume I have a leak in the fuel line. Does this sound resonable and does anyone have any comments or advice?

Re: 1991 johnson 150hp starting problem

I have replaced the gas line bulb, but it still won't pump up. I figure I have a gas leak. How do I find the leak? Does it have to be between the bulb and motor, or is it possible it is front of the gas line bulb? I need to find the problem because my motor still does't start when it loses its prime.
