Piston engines in aircraft usually use 100 grade engine oil, what you would call 50 weight.
When you fly to cold climates, and hanger space isn't available, some aircraft manufacturers used an oil dilution valve to pump aviation fuel (av gas) into the crankcase to thin out the engine oil so the engine would start easier the following day. After start up, the engine was run for xxx amount of time to evaporate the fuel before takeoff. For all those cringing, most were dry sump systems, but not all.

Pass the Olympic torch, so I can light my cigarette!

i hear what your saying.my father had a flame come out the vent pipe on a old 52 plymouth once.knocked him across the yard and implanted black oil in is face that was black for weeks.lucky he didnt get infection.i am still wonderinf how this oil ignited.ive seen fuel injected cylinders completely liquid locked before.when we get them running the fuel blows out the t-pipe.y didnt any of those blow.??i am going to keep looking.

did a compression test as part of checking things over and found 0 psi in #1 cylinder.we pulled the head and what do you know,a big hole in the piston.looked as thou it had been burning water.rest of piston was real clean.now i know y it was running rough at the ramp.i think this is one worth remembering.Don said that there was probably more than meets the eye.the reason i kept looking, thanks.

I have a feeling that hole in the piston is the ignition source, and not something that was caused by the explosion.
