1991 yamaha 9.9 clunking sound

I was out fishing yesterday and the kicker started making a clunking sound then stalled, I was able to start it out of couriosity after checking the oil and fuel, and the sound was still there. Has anyone had this happen before ?

Welcome to iboats ... you sure you ran it with sufficient oil? 50:1 ?

Thanks for the reply, i forgot to add this is a 4-stroke high thrust, I did check the oil and it was full and no evidence of water, next i will check the plugs and wires, as well as the filter, if there is one.
