1992 3 hp Johnson dies when I spin in reverse

Like the title say's my motor dies after about the 5 seconds or so when I spin it around to go in reverse. I can duplicate this by putting my finger an inch away from the exhaust port where the water spits out. So it appears the exhaust port cannot be blocked in anyway. This includes the base of the motor.

My model is the 2 cyclinder (forward/neutral only). It runs perfectly other than this issue. I can use reverse only enough to spin the boat around but when I try to back troll it dies.

Is this common/normal with this motor and is there a fix?

Thanks

I am thinking maybe when spun round it is inhaling its own exhaust fumes.

Only a guess but the only one I have to offer!

Can you try it with the cover off?

The exaust port/water tube is right under the hood. When I turn it around it appears that the base of the motor blocks the fumes and stalls the motors. I can duplicate this with my fingers (w/o turning the motor) as well.

Wondering if there is anything blocking the exhaust inside the lower unit. I reomoved the lower unit assly a while ago. Could I of done something then? It pumps water fine and runs like a champ otherwise so I am pretty sure I put it back right.
