Hello,
I have a recently purchased 1992 200hp Johnson. For all intents and puposes it does run well, but.....it could run better. Particularly starting and idling. It always has to have the throttle idled up in neutral to start, even after running. Then to get it in gear without stalling is a challenge. Once in gear and given a little gas it goes just fine. Then after running it will idle just fine. Seems like the glitch is just after starting.

I have read much about Champion spark plugs and found out this motor has NGK R BR9H6 10 plugs in it. I am wondering if these are correct and what the Champion cross number and gap might be?

Also, in looking at the wires from the rear of the engine the top right wire is twice as long as the others and rests on the plug below it. Could this cause problems? Should it be replaced with a similar wire to the other 5 holes?

I haven't done a decarb session yet, but that is planned.

Where would be a good source for a manual for this motor?

Thanks in advance.

Winfield

Re: 1992 Johnson 200hp Plugs, Wires, Manual

according to Champion, the plug calls for QL16V gapped at .030, rough Idling could be a couple of things, plugs, high voltage arcing, try shortening up that long wire, carb tweeking if adjustable idle jets, if those jets are fixed jets, then try cleaning it out (I would suggest remove the carbs and clean with thinners), but since it runs ok after warm, then it might be the timing needs a bit of an adjustment, once the thermostat opens up on a warm engine, the timing does make a difference, but not as much as when cold. a not bad book is the seloc manual volume 5 for johnson/evinrude which covers 1992 to 1996 all v4-v6 and v8 powerheads,
