I'm looking at a boat with a 92 johnson 70 hp on it.
hours unknown. Are there any fundamental problems with these motors? It has just had the impellor replaced.
Is this a tell tale sign of trouble to come?

No. That is a sign that it has been rather well cared for.

The triple looper was first introduced over 30 years ago and has been one of the best (and most copied) engines in the JohnnyRude line.

No 14 year old engine is a slam dunk jewel, but a Johnny 70 was a great engine and is as good a bet as you will find at that age.

Thanks JB
Any other advice on what to look for as an indicator of motor health or lack of it?

Yes, get compression readings on all three cylinders. Compression should be over 100 psi and with 5-10 psi of each other.
