1992 mecury 100hp 4 cylinder.well took the boat out today.got about 10 mile off shore and the moter dies.messed with it for a while and got to take off in gear. got the boat home and start checking it out. i pulled the plugs the 2nd plug from the top was covered with gas. I checked to see if it was getting fire. It was not, I changed the plug and wire and still no fire. Is there away to check the coil or could it be some thing else? all the other plugs are fireing. thanks for any help. josh

Swap the suspected bad coil with any of the others and see if the problem travels with the coil. Coil failures are rare, but never say never. Unfortunately the most likely suspect is the switchbox. If you still have dead spark on the same cylinder when you swap coils, it's pretty much gotta be the switchbox.

Get the CDI/ Rapair switchbox. Fortunately you only need one with a 4 cylinder. Costs about $125, do a search for the best price.
