Started my 40 HP Evinrude yesterday for the first time since I bought it. Not sure how long since it was last run for any length of time. Started right up, and ran fine for a few minutes, then the water just stopped coming out of the tell tale. Am I safe to assume the impeller/waterpump is gone? Thanks!

The motor was used previously in fresh or salt water ? Need to pull lower leg and check impeller condition, wild guessing doesn't work..

Happy Boating

Always in fresh water. I have seen some say impeller some say thermostat. Was pumping a good stream then stopped, so I didn't think the thermostat would close AFTER warming up right? Looking at pump kits.

The thermostat has nothing to do with the telltale !!------Check the tell tale hose and fitting for blockage.-----If you do not know the age / condition of impeller it is time for a new one.-----Have you tested the overheat warning horn ?

OK - I thought thermo did not sound right. I have not tested the horn. I shut it off right away when I realized the water output had stopped. How is the horn tested?

Thank you for your help!

The telltale hose may have plugged.-----Motor would still be cooling just fine.------On a new to you boat the rule is -----Install a new impeller.

Yeah, sounds right. I can blow through the tell tale, so I think its clear, but will double check.

Thanks again!

If it is a plugged telltale the motor will cool fine.------But you should put in a new impeller as you do not know how old it is or how it has been treated.

Are you running in water or hooked up to muffs? My muffs are finicky to get on right.

Once you really center the flow of water to the intakes it was pissing in the wind :)

I'll probably have to replace my impeller soon anyway, but was good to get by last season for sure.

I was using muffs, but they were working fine, then it just stopped pissing. Moved the muffs around, with no change. Guess I'll pull the lower and see what's going on.

Thanks again all....
